The Old Man and Small Dog left the house at 7:15 on this bright winter morning. It is a glorious Thursday morning in South Alabama, with a cloudless sky, and temperatures in the low 40s. This is Small Dog's walk, and the Old Man makes no effort to hurry her along. She stops frequently to sniff at various favorite spots, and the Old Man waits patiently fore her to satisfy her curiosity.

On the first half of their walk, they see and hear the rush of morning traffic from Welch Cove, which is on the other side of the little lake. Welch Cove is generally populated with a younger group of families, and they have places to go and people to see on this cold winter morning. Once the Old Man and Small Dog make the right angle turn at the bottom of the hill, the traffic drops off dramatically. The Old Man and Small Dog continue the second half of their short walk, eveling in the clear blue sky and bright sunshine.
